Rev. Jeff Courter has been with Westernville Church for over three years, a graduate of McCormick Seminary in Chicago. This is a second career for him – before coming to Westernville, he had been in the telecommunications industry and in the military. A lifelong Presbyterian, he sees the church’s mission as one of building community: our common faith builds bridges of love not only to one another but also to those different than ourselves. Community comes from acceptance, and our acceptance of one another is grounded in understanding that God loves and accepts us. In creed, sacrament, and mission, we are united to God through Christ, and bound to one another in love.
Westernville itself was founded in 1797, and our church sanctuary was built in 1818. Behind the church, in the Westernville cemetery, lies William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. While our roots go back, our focus is on who we are today, and where God is leading us. We have a range of ministries within our local area, including support for food pantries, a Sunday School class which is growing, and a partnership with the North Western United Methodist Church which includes picnics and a joint youth ministry program. We recently completed an addition to our historic building, adding handicap access and room for new programs.
